Zoom Lent Course 2023

22nd Feb – 5th April

Here’s a bit of advanced notice from Rev Donna about the Scroll Church Lent Course: We will be reading ‘Easter Earthquake’ by James A. Harnish for our Zoom book study during Lent, meeting on Wednesdays at 11am. The study group is open to all who wish to join, including any new friends from our renewed collaboration with Churches Together, and in fact anyone in the local area and beyond!

Hamish is a retired United Methodist minister in Florida and the author of several books. This one will take us through an exploration of how Jesus’ resurrection impacts our assumptions about ourselves and about God. Each week has daily readings and a prayer focus along with a hymn, and there are helpful suggestions and questions for each week to help guide discussion.

The cost of the book is around £12 from Amazon and Eden and other bookshops. We would recommend that you order your book ASAP as delivery times could be around 2-3 weeks at present.

The course will run as follows:

Everyone will need to read through to page 22 before Ash Wednesday, Feb 22
through page 36 for March 1
through page 50 for March 8
through page 64 for March 15
through page 77 for March 22
through page 91 for March 29
and through page 112 for April 5 (which carries us through to Easter)

Everyone is welcome to join. Please just let us know in advance so you can receive the Zoom link.

‘Through the Year with John Newton’ 365 Daily Readings – Stephen Poxon

Front cover of book 'Through the year with John Newton'

As you might already know, January 2023 marks the 250th anniversary of John Newton’s ‘Amazing Grace’ sermon and, therefore, the anniversary of his great hymn ‘Amazing Grace’.

John Newton’s story (slave captain to Anglican clergyman) is a tremendous witness to the grace of God, and the fact that ‘Amazing Grace’ is still being sung across the world today is testament to that fact.

To that end, THROUGH THE YEAR WITH JOHN NEWTON is still available, and can be ordered online or from any bookshop (Lion Hudson/Monarch ISBN 978-0-85721=946-6.)

‘Through the Year with John Newton’ is 365 Daily Readings, each matched to a Bible verse and a prayer. A suitable companion for the 250th anniversary commemorations! (Stephen Poxon)
